"While I cannot say that I am in a stage of burnout (I have a wonderful
church who has been very caring), nevertheless, I had come to a point in
my ministry where years and years of dealing with the "same old, same
old" had taken its toll. "I had come to the place where trying to make ministry work instead of resting in God's grace had left me drained. It took a trip to the Smoldering Wick Retreat Center and a book that was given to me while there, "The Pressure's Off" by Larry Crabb to make me begin to understand that, even though I had trusted Christ since 1973, my ministry was being defined more by "law" than by "grace." It was not so much that I was teaching law nor was I in a legalistic church, but the expectations and demands to "get things right" was keeping me from enjoying God and His call in my life. The time away at Smoldering Wick for my wife and I may go down as one of the spiritually most significant times of our lives. I cannot say that I have come back feeling rejuvenated (old patterns are hard to die), but I can say that I have learned something about the awesome wonder of God who is still in control even when things do not work as you wish they would. I also want to thank the Wenzels for their ministry. "I appreciated the informality of sitting around the table and sharing from God's Word. I also felt loved and accepted and a part of the Wenzel family. Both my wife and I feel that we not only were ministered to, but that we now have some new friends in Christ that we did not have before." Steve Reynolds,Waverly, NY
